How Your Brain Messes With You (My Favorite Optical Illusions)

The The

Read the sentence above carefully. Now read it again. Notice a repeated word. Lazy brain!

The image below is static. Your brain invents the black dots whenever you’re not looking.

Spot the black dot

(See below.) Round and round she goes… where she starts / ends no-one knows.

Fatigue your eyes by staring at the center dot. Notice the outside circles begin to move? (Not everyone sees this illusion. I’m not sure why.)

Funny how your brain makes a cluster of moving dots into a dog…

All of the lines below are parallel:

The next few images are static. Watch them for a bit and see them begin to move.

Apparently, squares A, B and C below are all the same color. Our brain takes its cues from the surrounding shadows (or lack thereof) and thus makes the colors seem different.

Let the image below mess with you for a bit…

With next two static images, things seem to start moving when you’re not looking at them – and then as your eyes dart there, something else appears to move…

Which building is closer, 1 or 2? (Are you sure?)

IMG_4670

This one is animated. Stare at the black cross. Where does the green dot suddenly come from?

IMG_5841

Are those wheels moving when you’re not looking? (Static image.)

IMG_7857

I swear it’s moving. Isn’t it? (Static image.)

IMG_7858

Look at the squares for a while. Can you make them move? (This one’s also tricky for some.)

IMG_3322

These are exactly the same images and Pisa is at exactly the same angle. So why does the one the right seem to lean more?

IMG_3321

This one is REALLY amazing! (Did your brain just see colors where there are none?)

IMG_3317

No trick photography here… (The room is built strangely.)

IMG_3316

Each colored circle is only moving up and down. So why does the whole thing seem to rotate? (Think ‘Mexican wave’.)

IMG_3313

Coming or going? Will the train to change direction with the pure power of your mind…

IMG_2984

Dolphin or car? (It depends on how far away you are…)

IMG_1892

What’s going on here?

IMG_1768

Is the widow facing left or right?

How many legs? (Makes my head hurt.)

Question: Is the dancer spinning clockwise or anticlockwise? Answer: Both

dancer

Look at the black dot for long enough and the grey haze will start to disappear. (Static image)

Both of the doors and then both central circles below are the same size. No really.

How’s your head after all that?
